Dogs cannot sweat &mdash; they cool primarily by panting, which is far less efficient than human sweating. Cats are also vulnerable, especially when trapped in conservatories or sheds.<\/p>\n<h2>The 7-Second Pavement Test<\/h2>\n<p>Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. <strong>If it&#8217;s too hot for your hand, it&#8217;s too hot for paws.<\/strong> At 25&deg;C air temperature, asphalt can reach 52&deg;C &mdash; hot enough to cause burns in seconds.<\/p>\n<h2>Safe Walk Times<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Before 9am<\/strong> or <strong>after 6pm<\/strong> &mdash; avoid the 10am&ndash;4pm danger zone<\/li>\n<li>Stick to grassy or shaded routes<\/li>\n<li>Above 20&deg;C: shorten and slow down walks. Above 27&deg;C: <strong>skip the walk entirely<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Carry water and a portable bowl on every walk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Never Leave a Dog in a Car<\/h2>\n<p>On a <strong>20&deg;C day<\/strong>, the inside of a car can reach <strong>47&deg;C within minutes<\/strong>. Cracking windows or parking in shade is not enough.
