It is a good source of protein and healthy fat for them, and can keep them well distracted in the evening. But adding bacon into the mix? Well, we don’t think your dogs will forgive you if the supply runs out.

Whether you want to bake their biscuits because you love making their homemade meals because you want to know what is going into their diet (and dog biscuits is no different), or simply because you love them to try something new, these biscuits are a really nice starting point and are certainly different to anything available in the shops.

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3909" src="https://www.petz.uk/wp-content/uploads/Homemade-dog-biscuits.jpg" alt="Homemade dog biscuits" width="1199" height="513" / fetchpriority="high" srcset="https://www.petz.uk/wp-content/uploads/Homemade-dog-biscuits.jpg 1199w, https://www.petz.uk/wp-content/uploads/Homemade-dog-biscuits-300x128.jpg 300w, https://www.petz.uk/wp-content/uploads/Homemade-dog-biscuits-1024x438.jpg 1024w, https://www.petz.uk/wp-content/uploads/Homemade-dog-biscuits-768x329.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1199px) 100vw, 1199px" />

For the below recipe, whole wheat flour has the best health benefits for dogs but unbleached all-purpose is usually fine too – speak to your vet first to ensure your dog doesn’t have any allergies. For the oats, rolled or quick are good, but we prefer the former to add a bit of texture (although your dog may disagree!)

Ingredients

255g natural peanut butter

180ml skimmed milk

1 large egg (or 60g unsweetened applesauce)

240g whole wheat flour

1 tbsp baking powder

30g oats

2–3 strips cooked streaky bacon, chopped

Instructions

Preheat oven to 160C. Line two large baking sheets with paper and set aside

In a large bowl, mix the peanut butter, milk and egg together. Once combined, add the flour and baking powder

Mix in the oats and bacon. If the mixture is quite thick and heavy, you may need to turn it out onto a floured surface and combine with your hands

Using a rolling pin, roll into around 1cm thickness then cut into shapes using a cookie cutter. And, if it will be a regular bake, why not buy a dedicated doggy cutter? Either dog, paw or bone-shaped cutters are widely available.

They will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for a week, or in the fridge for around two weeks – but nothing lasts that long in our homes and we doubt these will be an exception in yours!

Everybody is baking right now –
